چکیده

Sodium borosilicate glasses containing various concentrations of rhenium or technetium were fabricated, and their vibrational spectra studied using a Raman microscope. Spectra were interpreted with reference to new high resolution measurements of alkali pertechnetates and perrhenates NaReO4, KReO4, NaTcO4, and KTcO4. At low concentrations of ReO4 or TcO4 , glass spectra show weak peaks superimposed on a dominant spectrum of glass characteristic of silicate and borate network vibrations. At high concentrations, sharp peaks characteristic of crystal field splitting and C4h symmetry dominate the spectra of glasses, indicating alkali nearby tetrahedral Re or Tc. Often peaks indicative of both the K and Na pertechnetates/ perrhenates are evident in the Raman spectrum, with the latter being favored at high additions of the source chemical, since Na is more prevalent in the glass and ion exchange takes place. These results have significance to immobilization of nuclear waste containing radioactive 99 Tc in glass for ultimate disposal.

Optical characterization of BK7 borosilicate glasses containing different amounts of CeO2

Borosilicate BK7 glasses doped with different amounts of CeO2 (0.5,1,1.5%) were prepared by the convenient melting process in this work. DTA analysis proved that 0.5-1% CeO2 has a network modifier role and then up to 1.5% it shows network former role. For structural studies, FT-IR and Raman spectroscopy were carried out. Fermi energy level, direct/ indirect optical band gap and Urbach energy wer...

Coordination Environments of Highly Charged Cations (Ti, Cr, and Light REE’s) in Borosilicate Glass/Melts to 1120°C

The local environments around Ti, Cr, and several light rare-earth elements (La, Ce, and Nd) were investigated by in-situ XANES spectroscopy in a number of complex borosilicate glasses and melts (to 1120 °C) that are used for nuclear waste storage. Examination of the high-resolution XANES spectra at the Ti K-edge shows that the average coordination of Ti changes from ~5 to ~4.5. Cr is dominantl...

X-ray absorption studies of chlorine valence and local environments in borosilicate waste glasses

Chlorine (Cl) is a constituent of certain types of nuclear wastes and its presence can affect the physical and chemical properties of silicate melts and glasses developed for the immobilization of such wastes. Cl K-edge X-ray absorption spectra (XAS) were collected and analyzed to characterize the unknown Cl environments in borosilicate waste glass formulations, ranging in Cl-content from 0.23 ...

Structural heterogeneity and pressure-relaxation in compressed borosilicate glasses by in situ small angle X-ray scattering.

We report on Brillouin and in situ small angle X-ray scattering (SAXS) analyses of topological heterogeneity in compressed sodium borosilicate glasses. SAXS intensity extrapolated to very low angular regimes, I(q = 0), is related to compressibility. From Brillouin scattering and analyses of the elastic properties of the glass, the Landau-Placzek ratio is determined and taken as a direct reflect...

The Relationship between Structural and Optical Properties of GeO2-PbO Glasses

The structural and optical characterization of bulk GeO2-PbO glasses was the goal of this study. In this regard, six different (100-x)GeO2‌-xPbO (15<x<45) glasses were prepared by conventional melt quenching technique between two steel sheets. The produced samples were characterized using scanning electron microscopy (SEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) and UV-Vis s...
